It is all about being able to compete. If a track can't provide the purses needed for the survival of the horse owners (in general), they will eventually close up shop. If your competition is getting purse subsidies from somewhere and you are not, then chances are you are in trouble.

On the other hand, there are so many tracks "competing" against each other during the summer months that problems are bound to exist. Although I hate to see a track close up shop, the reality is that Ellis, Thistle, Beulah, River are probably not long for this world. Will those tracks closing help racing at other venues? Probably not much. Most likley, the majority of the owners racing at those tracks just decide to close up shop as well.
