most americans thought that capitalism and democracy and the united states were one and the same
IMHO......you got just about right. That "americans thought that capitalism and democracy and the united states were one and the same" is a commentary on public education from the 70s on.... when we stoped teaching the general population how to think/weigh evidence and started teaching them what to think.

going west hit arlington-but left before the big races and around 4pm i found myself in iowa

a most depressing place and i said WTF did i just do bad idea-but couldnt turn around-slept in des moines hotel

hit nebraska and that was a real upper-i was estatic to get out of iowa-

then in the late afternoon hit colorado and agree with breakage that it was boring-remember my brother telling me that southern colorado was a bible belt area and nothing else there...but kept saying anything is better than iowa...hit grand junction and at dusk found a nice hotel in the hills...air had a bit of a chill to it while the rest of the country was baking hot

We hit Iowa right around the time of the very bad flooding it was very depressing.

Most controversial observation of the trip-

I think it is obvious the most friendly people in this country are in the midwest,
away from both coasts, I have made this drive maybe 12 times in my life and it has almost always proven to be the case.

Could that be because the population in the middle of the country is obviously the most homegenous? You walk down a major street in any major coastal city you are liable to run into people from 100 different countries of all shapes, races and sizes-

you roll down main street in OKC, people may be white, black and hispanic,
but most were born and raised here.

i was driving to del mar-so i met very few people-decided not to take my cell phone

met some friendly people at arlington and in utah

left ocean city md friday morning and wanted to get to arlington for the 1st race on saturday-going west pretty much went the speed limit...was dead tired and stopped off at some small hotel in maybe indiana-asked the manager if i could sleep in the parking lot for about half an hour-he was cool with it

people were friendly everywhere i went-new mexico-got tremendous directions to delaware from a trucker in arkansas

people were really friendly in carlsbad and at the track at del mar-there was maybe 1 obnoxious idiot the entire 3 weeks at del mar-and a lot of people were good handicappers

just didnt like vegas-got lost in some bad part of the city and finally got to the casinos and said pass on this

when i was in colorado-i was torn between going to wyoming and up north and then all the way down 1-didnt do it

the exit came up suddenly and passed up on it-maybe next time

also coming home-almost went south to san antonio-wanted to go all the way along the gulfcoast-again maybe next time

I have found the people in the south to be the nicest in terms of manners. The most positive and upbeat people I have met are on the West Coast
