Hold on. No slots money here. Last year they averaged an one and a half horse less per race than this year. There were real concerns on whether they could get enough horses to run at the meet and I'm not talking 6 horse fields. The Ellis Park Racing Secretary got creative and he decided to card a ton of turf races since that is what Hoosier Park doesn't have (there was only 2 days Indiana Downs and Ellis Park overlapped). The meet so far has been a success so Ellis with of course the Horsemen's approval add 5 more Fridays and u ridicule/criticize/make fun of/whatever u want to call it. Geez. Also, please note that the purses at Ind. Downs and Hoosier Park aren't as high as projected which also helps Ellis Park compete for horses since the purses are very similar.
Ellis Park was scheduled to run 48 dates this year. The five additional race dates will bring the total to 28 dates. 20 fewer dates than scheduled. That still isn't good. Churchill lost 7 dates. We will see what Turfway will do. Their September meet is a bit different than the winter meet. I've read where they will cut stakes money to keep overnight purses at last year's level but I haven't researched it or asked about it lately. I don't know what the Ellis Park owner will do next year and I'm not going to publicly speculate on here. I do know it has been alot of fun to announce at Ellis Park this year even with the major logistical problems of going back and forth since the dates have been reduced from last year. |
