Movie to tell story of jockey legend Krone By Christina Macone-Greene Movie to tell story of jockey legend Krone - SignOnSanDiego.com Sunday, January 10, 2010 at 12:04 a.m. CARLSBAD — Jockey Julie Krone doesn’t don her racing silks anymore, but her megastar status has not waned. The story of the sports icon who smashed sexist walls in the racing world and overcame debilitating injuries on the track captured the attention of Gravity Films. The studio plans to make a movie, titled “Freak,” on Krone’s life. Shooting is scheduled to begin in April. The film’s title originally was “The Boys Club.” Krone, 46, who lives in Carlsbad with her husband, Jay Hovdey, and 4-year-old daughter, Lorelei, said that when she learned of the new title, she let it sink in, then decided it was perfect. “When I was younger and infallible, I had ‘freakish’ gifts that were so fast and so amazing,” said Krone, reminiscing of past races. “Reins would break, and I wouldn’t even need them.” Krone tallied 3,704 career wins, the most ever by a female rider, and earned $90.1 million in purses. She remains the only woman to have won a Triple Crown race, the Belmont Stakes in 1993; a Breeders’ Cup race, in 2003; and the million-dollar Pacific Classic in Del Mar, in 2003. Krone was inducted into the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame in 2000. She is the only woman to hold that honor. To get there, however, she had to overcome fierce obstacles. During her career, Krone suffered major injuries, including six fractures in her vertebrae, broken hands and cracked ribs. She also faced chauvinism. Jockeys would close her in on the rail and call her names. In her autobiography, “Riding For My Life,” Krone wrote, “Men just didn’t want to be beaten by a little girl.” The hardship never rattled her confidence. In fact, it fueled her desire to succeed. Katherine Brooks and Sophie Watts of Gravity Films, based in Los Angeles, were moved by Krone’s book. “I fell in love with Julie’s story, not so much for its inside take on horse racing, but because it was such a compelling example of a love affair about a woman and her job,” said Watts, the producer. “It’s about a girl whose gender could have doomed her to failure, but she fought it and came out the other side as one of the nation’s greatest sporting heroes.” Watts said Krone’s life is something everyone can relate to — it’s about beating the odds. Aside from telling the life story of a gifted athlete, Brooks and Watts were attracted to Krone’s magnetic personality. “She’s tough, vulnerable, open, closed, paradoxical, amusing, smart, and sweet,” said Brooks, the writer and director of “Freak.” “She’s an entire package, which is why she is a great character for a movie.” Brooks said she wants to take moviegoers on an intimate journey through Krone’s life and fight to the top. “I want people to feel what it was like to be inside of Julie during this time,” said Brooks, noting how Krone wore several faces on the track. Krone would like to see horses portrayed on an intimate level in “Freak” — to intellectually digest the special connection between the animals and humans. “Horses are amazing,” Krone said. “Horses are hard-wired to like us.” Krone contributes her victories from being “in tune” with the animals. Her mother, Judi Krone, the late award-winning dressage rider and horse trainer, taught her daughter how to ride. Early on, Julie Krone intuitively knew when to give and take with the reins. “The difference between being a good jockey and a great jockey is letting the energy go and feeling the horse,” she said. Krone stopped racing in 2004 but returned in October 2008 for one race — the Living Legends at Santa Anita, where she finished fifth. Horses still play an important part in her life. She takes part in the horsemanship seminars and keeps two horses — a palomino quarter horse and a pony — at a stable in Rancho Santa Fe. Krone will consult during the filming of “Freak,” which is expected to take seven weeks. Cameras will roll in New York and Louisiana. Brooks and Watts expect the movie to be released around spring 2011. Brooks would not reveal who will play Krone. She said, though, that the actress and Krone have something in common. At some point in their career, Brooks said, both women endured ridicule and judgment. “The actress playing Julie is not what people will expect,” Brooks said. “People will go into the movie with their preconceived notions of who this actress is because of tabloid gossip, but they will come out respecting her, because they will be reminded of how strong of an actress she is.” Christina Macone-Greene is a freelance writer from Fallbrook.

remember she said she fell in love with horses after that Breeders Cup movie, they could probably get her to look like Julie fairly well...

I've told this story before. I was sitting on a bench near the SA paddock close to where the jockeys return after a race, Laffit Pencay walked by, he was relaxed chatting with fans and signing autographs. I looked up from my form right into the eyes of Julie Kroon, the fiercest brightest pair of baby blues I had ever seen. She was scary.
