Early Triple Crown nominations dip to 366

The right horses are there, but the numbers are down with 366 3-year-old thoroughbreds nominated to the 2010 Triple Crown races.

That's a 9percent decline from the 401 early nominations in 2009 and the lowest since the 358 in 2005. The latter year reflected a Kentucky foal crop decimated by mare reproductive loss syndrome, which caused mares to abort. Excluding that year, the last time the nominations to the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont dipped to this level was 1996 (361).

Baffert,Asmussen,and Pletcher account for 300 of the nominees. The other 66 are Gill horses from Penn, which have no riders listed at this time.
